A Georgia man is crediting his two-legged Chihuahua with saving his life after he suffered a heart attack. Atlanta 63-year-old Andrew Kuzyk was watching TV with his dog, Champ, when the tiny Chihuahua started pushing on his owner’s chest and whining. The strange behavior alerted him to chest pain he hadn't noticed, prompting his wife Pamela to call for emergency help.
Kuzyk was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors discovered he was having a severe heart attack caused by a blocked artery, commonly referred to as a “widow maker.” During surgery, his heart stopped twice, but he survived and is now recovering. “I know for sure I wouldn’t be here without Champ,” he says.
The dog was born missing two legs and was rejected by his birth mother. They were going to euthanize him when Kuzyk stepped in to adopt him seven years ago. Champ has helped Kuzyk recognize serious health issues before, including a past brain cancer diagnosis. He describes his pup as a constant, loving companion, saying, “I love him with all my heart.”
