Kitten Walks Into NYC Subway Car, Finds Forever Home

During her usual morning subway commute in New York City last Thursday, Betsaida Mercado encountered an unexpected passenger: a small tabby kitten that wandered onto her train. A video of the tiny cat crossing the platform and boarding the train has gone viral on social media. Passengers reacted with a mix of surprise, amusement, and concern as she meowed and moved through the subway car.

Harlem resident Pocahontae Nehemiah, who filmed the video, says that everyone on the train was focused on the kitten’s safety. Eventually, Mercado stepped in and picked her up, holding her for the rest of the ride. She says her first instinct was to make sure the kitten was okay and then immediately thought, “I’m going to be a cat mom.”

Mercado’s boyfriend, who’d already agreed in past conversations that they could take in a stray, met her at the next station and took the kitten home. They named her Emmie, short for MTA (New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority). Mercado says the kitten was clean and never resisted being picked up, and she felt it was meant to be.
