Earlier this month, a tip from a teenage video gamer helped authorities thwart a mass shooting at a California middle school. The gamer from Tennessee overheard a 14- and 15-year-old discussing the attack during an online game and reached out to law enforcement, leading Tehama County Sheriff's deputies to execute a search warrant on a home in Cottonwood. There they found bombs, firearms, a manifesto detailing plans for the attack, and a hit list of more than 100 people.

The gamer also had a pic of the two teens dressed as the Columbine High School shooters, which helped authorities take the threat seriously. Sheriff Dave Kain credits the young Tennessean for his courageous actions, stressing that his report directly led to the prevention of the planned attack on Evergreen Middle School. During a press conference, Kain said he hopes the teen will come forward so he can be properly recognized for his courageous act.

Sheriff Kain noted that his own son returned to school following the incident, showing that he had confidence that the threat had been fully neutralized. He praised the teen gamer as a hero and pointed to the case as an example of the importance of speaking up when something feels wrong.
