A student at Shore Middle School in Mentor, Ohio, is heading to Super Bowl 59 after winning a national video contest promoting kindness. On Friday, 12-year-old Mary McMahon’s music class was interrupted by Stuart Musynski, CEO and Co-Founder of the Values-in-Action Foundation, who announced that out of thousands of entries from more than 650 schools across the country, Mary had won the “Kickoff for Kindness” video contest.
Mary had hoped that she might win the $500 shopping spree but was completely surprised to learn she’d won the contest’s top prize. She and her family are now headed to the Super Bowl, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “I had no idea,” Mary said, “I’m so excited.” Her mom, Jamie, expressed her pride in Mary’s efforts, saying she never imagined her daughter would win Super Bowl tickets for her act of kindness.
The Values-in-Action Foundation has been promoting kindness and respect for 30 years through similar initiatives and has been partnering with Mentor schools for 20. As she looks forward to the big game, Mary says she’s excited about cheering for the Chiefs and she hopes she might catch a glimpse of Taylor Swift.
