You might be a dog person, or you might be more of a cat person.
But if you’re looking for a more unique pet instead, you might be out of luck.
In every state, there’s a list of animals that are banned.
The law — which varies from state to state — aims to shield the public from exotic animals that could pose safety risks, like lions or bears. In some states, citizens can own some unique pets with permits, but there are consequences in store for those who keep exotic pets illegally, according to Stacker and MSN.
So, which ones are banned in Ohio?
Lions and tigers and bears (oh, my!).
That's a start, at least.
There are seven animals that can't pass as pets for residents in the State of Ohio.
Ohioans can’t have these seven animals as pets:
- Lion
- Tiger
- Bear
- Elephant
- Alligator
- Monkey
- Serval
Here’s what Stacker reads:
“The state of Ohio considers hippopotami, Komodo dragons, and howler monkeys, among other animals, dangerous. Snakes that are 12 feet or longer are also prohibited. Permits are required for certain situations, including exempted dangerous animals.”
