Gambler Avoids $200,000 Loss Thanks To Manny Machado Walk-Off Grand Slam

A bettor who placed a $200,000 wager on the San Diego Padres-Texas Rangers game last Wednesday (August 19) lucked out after the game went into extra innings. The bettor believed the two teams would score at least eight runs and took the over bet at -110 odds. 

When the game entered the top of the ninth inning, the Padres were clinging to a 2-1 lead, and it seemed unlikely the teams would score five more runs before the game was over. The Rangers tied the game with a lead-off home run from Joey Gallo. The bettor still needed four more runs but didn't get any help from the Padres in the bottom of the ninth. 

The Padres failed to score, sending the game to extra innings. Thanks to a new rule that places a runner on second base during extra innings, the Rangers managed to plate one run, taking a 3-2 lead. The bettor's chances of winning slightly improved, but he would need the Padres to score more than two runs in order to win. 

The Padres loaded the bases for Manny Machado. He only needed a base hit to win the game, but the bettor needed the ball to leave the park so that at least three runs could score. 

Machado delivered, sending a 3-2 pitch sailing over the left-center field fence, giving the Padres a 6-3 walk-off victory. The grand slam also turned a potential $200,000 loss into a $181,000 win for the extremely lucky gambler.
